đž Through the Lens: A Day with the Wild at Fort Worth Zoo
Some adventures donât require plane tickets or passports.
Sometimes, wonder lives just down the roadâtucked inside tree-lined paths, behind carefully designed enclosures, where animals from every corner of the world carry stories in their eyes.
Thatâs what I found at the Fort Worth Zoo.
From the moment I walked in, it felt like I was stepping into a living collection of the worldâs most incredible animalsâall just a short drive from home. I watched elephants kick up dust and toss it across their backs to cool down, completely at ease in their space. Giraffes wandered slowly in the sun, towering and calm, occasionally glancing over the fence like they were just as curious about me. A meerkat popped up, made eye contact, then disappeared just as quickly. And the flamingos? They were something elseâgrouped together like artwork, each one standing perfectly still as if waiting to be sketched.
The gorillas were deep in thought, sitting in the shade, their posture almost human. Then came the tigerâresting in a beam of sunlight, so still and powerful I barely dared to breathe near its enclosure. I had my camera, of course, but I found myself putting it down just to watch. To really see how these animals moved, how they existed in stillness, how much you can notice when you stop rushing to capture everything. Even the tortoises, slow and steady, left an impressionâreminding me that not all adventures are fast-paced. Some are quiet. Some invite you to slow down. This wasnât a big trip or a bucket list destination, but it gave me everything I love about travel: perspective, presence, and that feeling of discovering something worth remembering.
What animal has left an impression on you?
Was it in the wild, a zoo, or somewhere unexpected?
Tell me in the commentsâIâd love to know what creatures have captured your imagination.
